Three faculty members attended different workshop and seminars for better application, enhancement and enrichment of their mathematical knowledge, especially for research and instruction purposes. Analiza Paña and Jean Centina attended the Special International Conference on Mathematics Education at Ateneo de Manila University, last October 20 – 22, 2016. The Philippine Council of Mathematics Teacher Educators (MATHTED) Inc., welcomed research presenters in the event with the theme, “Twenty Years and Onwards: Expanding Boundaries in Mathematics Education”.

While on October 25 – 27, 2016, Dr. Joy Picar attended the 11th Annual Convention of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP) – Regions 10, 12 and ARMM at the Regency Inn, Villa Abrille St., Davao City. The convention became a melting pot for researchers and educators in various areas such as pure and applied mathematics, education and mathematics, and statistics.

The theme “Mathematics in the Modern World: Bridging the Gap Between Reality and the Unknown” exposes a challenge for educators, especially that Math has been stereotypically labeled as “hard and uninviting”. DNSC hopes that the conferences will help its faculty inculcate appreciation and interest on the students through projecting Math as a sort of a quest. The concept of bringing the Unknown closer to Reality can help students view Mathematics, not as an unfamiliar territory of numbers and formulas, but a dimension that is part of reality which allows the adventure of finding out the value of things through playful and creative analysis and computations.
