PANABO CITY – As part of its 30th Charter Day Celebration, Davao del Norte State College (DNSC) brought hope and light to the Indigenous Peoples (IP) community of Sitio Lomondong, Brgy. Dagohoy, Talaingod on February 10, 2025. Through the “Maagwang Taliwala sa Marukilum” project, the team trekked to the highlands to distribute 48 portable solar-powered lights to families, helping improve living conditions and supporting the education of IP students.

The project was recognized as the winning entry in the 2024 Civil Service Anniversary Project Proposal Competition, securing ₱15,000 in funding. To further strengthen the initiative, the DNSC Multipurpose Employees Cooperative, Inc. pledged 14 additional solar light sets and food packs for both the project team and beneficiaries.

The project addresses a long-standing challenge faced by IP students, where the lack of electricity limits their ability to study at night. By providing solar-powered lights, the initiative enables students to extend their study hours, complete assignments, and improve academic performance.

Doris Bayluanon, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude, “Pasalamat ko sir kay gitagaan mi og ilaw. Dako akong pasalamat kay lisod gyud ang walay suga, labi na kung naay buhaton sa gabii. (I am very thankful, sir, for receiving this donation. It’s a huge help because it’s really difficult to do things at night without electricity.)”

Beyond its impact on education, the project also addresses safety concerns and enhances economic opportunities for the community. The availability of solar lights allows residents to move around safely at night and engage in livelihood activities such as weaving and crafting, boosting their economic well-being.

DNSC President Dr. Joy M. Sorrosa reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to sustainable development and community engagement, “This initiative is a testament to our dedication to community development and our mission to create a brighter future for all.”

Among the project team members who visited the site were Dr. Leo D. Rayon Jr. (Project Leader), Samuel A. Plando (Co-Project Leader), Jean D. Centina, Raquel J. Edjec, Ginela C. Lagare, Leron E. Odrada, Edrin G. Paltip, Antonio G. Dela Cruz, John Albert Dealagdon, Jandy D. Lerop, Randy C. Magayon Jr., and Geneses A. Ojagan.
