PANABO CITY – The collaborative project between Davao del Norte State College (DNSC) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region XI has completed its first milkfish harvest, yielding over 3,000 kilograms on March 28, 2025, roughly six months after the initial stocking.
This initiative centers on the deployment of a High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) fish cage system equipped for milkfish culture. The stocking, which began in late September 2024, involved 7,500 fingerlings provided by BFAR XI, alongside production inputs such as feeds for one cropping cycle, technical assistance, and continuous monitoring.
DNSC assumed operational management of the facility, mobilizing dedicated personnel to ensure optimal maintenance and fish health throughout the culture period.
The harvest was witnessed by key institutional leaders, including Dr. Rosie Lynn P. Tejada, Dean of the Institute of Aquatic and Applied Sciences, and Dr. Eliseo F. Huesca, Jr., Vice President for Research, Extension, and Production, along with project leader, Ms. Lanie G. Albert, and members: Mr. Lord Martino S. Mondigo, Mr. Cyril Tom B. Ranara, Mr. Louie L. Bersano, Mr. Michael B. Andam, Ms. Junilyn R. Palope, Mr. Primar B. Monton, and Mr. Reymart S. Camino.
The partnership, first conceptualized under then-Regional Director Raul C. Millana, was formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on September 2, 2024, with a shared goal of promoting sustainable aquaculture practices and enhancing regional fish production capacity. The progress of this project was made possible through the support of the Local Government Unit of Panabo – City Agriculture Office and the BFAR National Mariculture Center.
