PANABO CITY – Faculty members from the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology (BSMB) program at Davao del Norte State College (DNSC) participated in the 56th Annual Convention of the Federation of Institutions of Marine and Freshwater Sciences Incorporated (FIMFS). The event took place from October 22-24, 2024, at the Davao Oriental State University Regional Integrated Coastal Resource Management Center (DOrSU-RIC XI) in Mati City.

Mr. Carl Joseph O. Castañeda presented his research on the Population Density and Distribution of Sea Hare, Dolobella auricularia (Lightfoot, 1768) in the Intertidal Zone of Samal Island, Davao del Norte, Philippines. Miss Rezelle B. Sobradil discussed the Biodiversity of Giant Clams in Samal Island, Davao Gulf, Philippines. Additionally, BSMB alumnus Harold Jay T. Dalaygon, now with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) XI, presented his undergraduate thesis on the Status of Coral Communities in Marine Reserve Park (MRP), Barangay Adecor, Island Garden City of Samal. The convention’s theme was “BLUE HARMONY: Regenerating our Aquatic Worlds”.

FIMFS, which began with five charter members in 1968, has grown into a 38-member institution. It includes public and private higher education institutions in the Philippines focused on marine and freshwater sciences. The federation is dedicated to fostering partnerships among its members, emphasizing the sharing of research outputs, facilities, resources, and expertise.
