PANABO CITY – Selected third and fourth year Information Technology and Information Systems students from the Institute of Computing at Davao del Norte State College (DNSC) participated in the Base Learn Base Build Workshop, a hands-on training on blockchain and AI-powered application development held at the DNSC Audio-Visual Room on August 14, 2025.

The event was organized by the Davao DeFi Community and Base Philippines with the goal of equipping students with practical skills in developing their first on-chain applications using the Base stack.

In his opening message, Dr. Mark Van M. Buladaco welcomed participants to the inaugural event, stating, “Today is more than just a seminar, it’s an opportunity to spark innovation. We hope the insights you gain here will inspire you to develop app ideas for your capstone projects and future ventures. The knowledge and skills you build today are a direct investment in your entrepreneurial journey.”

The sessions were facilitated by Ray Tristan Publeo, a DevRel Engineer at The BLOKC, member of Solana Superteam Philippines, and core contributor at Hiraya Network, along with Ruben P. Lacumba, Regional Mindanao Ambassador of Base Philippines and Founder of Davao DeFi Community. Publeo introduced the fundamentals of blockchain technology and guided students in building their first on-chain apps, while Lacumba emphasized the importance of grassroots blockchain education in Mindanao. Participants also explored the use of AI tools to transform their ideas into functional mini-apps, although time constraints limited the full presentation of their outputs.

For Shereen Gneiss B. Bautista, a BSIS student, the workshop was an eye-opening experience. “AI tools help us turn our ideas into their best and most efficient versions,” she shared.

Another BSIS student, Jayson Balbiran, also reflected on the activity, “During the Mini-App Challenge, we were surprised but at the same time had fun and learned a lot. It pushed us to think creatively in a short amount of time. We also experienced teamwork, problem-solving, and quick decision-making, which made it more exciting.”
