PANABO CITY – Davao del Norte State College, through the Research, Extension, and Production Unit’s Marine Biodiversity Research and Conservation Center, hosted a Training on Scientific Diving last November 7 – 8, 2023 at the DNSC main campus and DNSC Marine Reserve Park, Island Garden City of Samal.

The training was participated by the Marine Biology faculty members, staff, and graduate students. The training was graced by Capt. Michael John Puz, former Global Underwater Explorer (GUE) and DPV-1 instructor, assisted by Mr. Medel R. Silvosa, GUE Fundamentals, DPV-1, Diver, and alumnus of the Marine Biology program. They provided insights on dive planning and execution related to team scientific diving and research on the first day of the training while demonstrating the concepts on day two.

The activity was in partnership with the Institute of Aquatic and Applied Sciences and the Institute of Advanced Studies. It was facilitated by MBRCC head, Dr. Girley S. Gumanao, and Ms. Rezelle B. Sobradil. The purpose of the training in scientific diving for marine biology personnel and students is to equip them with the essential skills and knowledge necessary for conducting research and fieldwork in underwater environments.
